Jonathan Brown’s record cabinet
Jonathan Brown is a musician who grew up in Texas, but lived in both Belgium and Spain before finally settling down in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Ever since he arrived in the Netherlands, Jonathan Brown worked under the stage name Dusty Stray. As Dusty Stray, he has released three studio albums. Dusty Stray’s songs are founded on the American songwriting tradition, think: Smithsonian Folkways, Neil Young and alt-country. Where alt-country points at Dusty Strays 2011 record Light Years Away. On his works Tales of Misfortune and Woe (2009), Family Album (2013) and A Tree Fell (released november 2015) the folk noir genre is more prominent.
Visual artist: stuff stuck together
Jonathan Brown was born in 1967 in Taiwan to American parents. Soon after his birth they moved back to the USA to live in Nashville for a few years, and later to Dallas, Texas. Stimulated by art teachers at high school, Jonathan chooses to study arts at Austin College in Sherman Texas. He received his degree in 1990. He specialises on working with found footage. In Barcelona, where he ended up 1994, he co-founded the group of super-8 film projection artists Los Superocherons (“The Super Eighters”), who performed at clubs, art spaces and music festivals with live collages of Super-8 films.
His work continued after moving to Amsterdam in 2003, where he now focuses on collages, assemblages and sculptures with stuff he found on flea markets (such as the yearly Kings Day market). His work has been exhibited across Europe.

The previous bands and musical projects of Jonathan Brown
Jonathan Brown started the band Dusty Stray after moving to Amsterdam. Dusty Stray was however by far not the first musical project Jonathan was involved in. Brown attended guitar lessons from his 12th, and soon after he started writing his own songs. Most of them he wrote, sitting in the back of the church where his father worked as a preacher man. It took some time until he formed his first proper band, which he formed with some friends on college. In The Moaners, a band playing repertoire reminiscent of The Ramones, Jonathan Brown played drums and sang. Shortly after, Brown formed part of another band playing loungey music, Elektrolux. This group had a moderate success.
A few years later, by 1994, love brought Jonathan Brown to Spain, Barcelona to be precise. This was also the beginning of some new bands he played in. First there was Hackers, a bluegrass group he formed with two Brits who more or less taught him the genre in more detail. Another three piece band he played in was Slop, consisting of a drummer, a guitarist and Brown played electric slide bass. They produced a rather unlistenable sound and a few memorable shows in Spain. A third group Brown played in during his Barcelona period was Humo, which Jonathan formed with Felix Perez-Hita. Humo played a rather eclectic mix between (synth) pop and roots folk. They released one album in 2005, No More Room at the Madrid based independent label Rhonda Records.
Dusty Stray
Shortly after moving to Amsterdam Jonathan Brown formed a new musical group, Dusty Stray. In this band Brown plays guitar, banjo, ukulele and is the lead vocalist, Gert-Jan Blom (who also produced the debut album) plays bass guitar, Jac Bico plays slide guitar and singer Marjolein van der Klauw sings in a few duets with Jonathan on the album. The debut album Tales of Misfortune and Woe is released in 2009 on Dutch indie label BASTA.
For recording the second album Dusty Stray teams up with producers JB Meijers (currently The Common Linnets) and Ken Stringfellow (best known for his work with Posies and R.E.M.), which results in the album Light Years Away. An album full of lightweight songs with a really clear and in-your-face mix. On this album he sings the duets with Jesje de Schepper.
Kramer and Dusty Stray
Dusty Stray continues to write new songs and record new demos as he approaches Kramer, a musician he has been admiring for a long time. For example when Kramer worked solo and in the formation Bongwater. In a way, Kramer’s mixes are a lot like the visual art that Jonathan Brown produces. Family Album, the first album produced by Kramer, has more dubs than heard on the second album of Dusty Stray. The tiny, subtle details make the album sound more like a collage then the previous ones. Though not as much as the songs that Kramer’s band Bongwater once crafted. Family Album also marks the point where Dusty Stray returns to a darker sound, less bright mixes and more sinister lyrics. Because the co-operation turns out to be so successful, Kramer and Brown decide to continue to work together.
For the 2015 album, A Tree Fell and Other Songs, Kramer returns to Amsterdam to record the songs for the new record. A suprisingly fruitful recording session of four days length results in the 12 songs that are on the album.
A Tree Fell (2015)
The album is presented on November 5 at the Amsterdam venue De Roode Bioscoop. At the event, Jonathan Brown will be playing with Mario Ramirez (bass guitar, guitar, keyboard), Jonathan Ramirez (guitar, bass guitar and ukulele) and Jesje de Schepper who will be singing and playing omnichord. Jonathan Brown will be singing and playing the other instruments, such as guitar, banjo, ukulele and Chinese flute. A Tree Fell And Other Songs will be released digitally and on vinyl on November 6.
De platenkast van Jonathan Brown
Jonathan Brown groeit op in de Amerikaanse staat Texas, als zoon van een predikant. Hij geniet een progressieve opvoeding, waarin de muziek van Jesus Christ Superstar wordt omarmd en het niet erg is dat Jonathan tijdens de kerkdienst stiekem liedteksten schrijft. Brown krijgt dan al (vanaf zijn twaalfde) gitaarles. Tijdens deze lessen maakt hij kennis met de Amerikaanse folkklassiekers. Daarmee is de basis voor zijn huidige voorliefde voor de volksmuziek min of meer gelegd. Uiteindelijke belandt hij op het Austin college terecht, gelegen in de Texaanse plaats Sherman. Hij vormt er zijn eerste echte band, te weten de rockband The Moaners.
Na zijn opleiding woont en werkt Jonathan Brown in diverse plaatsen. En daarbij is de liefde voor de muziek nooit ver weg; in iedere plaats vormt hij hij wel een aantal groepen. Zo maakt hij in Barcelona deel uit van bands als Humo (eclectische synthfolk) en Hackers. Hackers, een bluegrassgroep, vormt Brown met twee Britten. Ze brengen Jonathan veel kennis bij over de verschillende technieken om banjo te spelen.
In 2005 verhuist Jonathan Brown en begint hij aanvankelijk een muzikaal duo. Vrij snel besluit hij een echt soloproject te beginnen om een podium te kunnen bieden aan zijn eigen nummers. Onder de naam Dusty Stray brengt hij in 2009 het eerste album (Tales of Misfortune and Woe) uit bij het Nederlandse label BASTA Music (o.a. Sonja van Hamel, Metropole Orkest en Fay Lovski). Sonja van Hamel tekent als vaste vormgever van BASTA voor het ontwerp van de hoes, en Gert-Jan Blom, die dan als bassist deel uitmaakt van Sonja’s liveband, produceert de plaat. Op de plaat zijn een aantal duetten te horen met zangeres Marjolein van der Klauw. De nummers ademen lichtvoetigheid, terwijl de verhalen die Dusty Stray brengt veelal somber of zelfs morbide zijn. Door de tweestemmige zang, het instrumentarium (waaronder de slidegitaar van Jac Bico) ademt de plaat grotendeels de sfeer van de countrymuziek, vooral in nummers als Sad Song, Winter’s Day en Hard Times.
Op de opvolger Light Years Away (2011) lijkt Dusty Stray meer nog dan op het debuut geïnspireerd te zijn door de country & western. Dat verklaart zich mede door de opvallend heldere en directe productie van het album. Die was in handen van J.B. Meijers (oud-Supersub en Shine) en Ken Stringfellow (Posies, R.E.M.). Op de plaat is ook een belangrijke rol weggelegd voor de banjo, zoals in de opener Light Years Away.
Het derde album, dat in 2013 verschijnt, is in productie-opzicht een stijlbreuk met het eerdere werk. De mixage voor Family Album is ditmaal in handen van Mark Kramer, een jeugdheld van Jonathan Brown vanwege Kramers eerdere bands, waaronder de eigenzinnige en uitbundige band Bongwater. Dit bevalt beiden dermate goed, dat Kramer en Brown samen 4 dagen doorbrengen in Jonathan Browns huis in Amsterdam om te werken aan wat de vierde plaat van Dusty Stray wordt: A Tree Fell and other songs. Dusty Stray op deze plaat bestaat naast Jonathan Brown uit zangeres Jesje de Schepper en (bas)gitaristen Mario en Jonathan Ramirez. Het album verschijnt in november 2015 in eigen beheer op vinyl en cd.
Ook live timmert Dusty Stray aardig aan de weg: zo speelt Dusty Stray tours door Duitsland, Spanje, Texas en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De groep zal ook een tweede keer tijdens South By Southwest in Austin diverse shows spelen op de diverse alternatieve festivals aldaar. Daarnaast werkt Jonathan Brown samen met zangeres Janne Schra voor haar album Ponzo, en schrijft hij met haar het nummer You are still new.
